Orangutans at the UNEP Governing Council

PanEco participates to the 11th UNEP Governing Council in Bali by organising the roundtable "Putting back biodiversity at the center of development: the ecosystems approach – the case of the orangutans". The roundtable will be held in the Green Room on February 25 with speakers representing the World Agroforestry Center ICRAF, the Great Ape Survival Partnership GRASP and PanEco's Denis Ruysschaert. As an introduction, the documentary "The REDD Ape - Orangutan, a Climate Chance" will be shown to the audience.

The event aims to raise civil society and Government understanding for the key role of Great Apes habitat, especially Sumatran orangutan inhabitat, for both the local economy (i.e. livelihood, fresh water, microclimate for agriculture, timber and disaster reduction) and global human kind (i.e. climate change and biodiversity). These roles are often neglected or taken for granted. The event will strategically take place just before before the UNEP Ministerial discussions on the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services that are held in the framework of 2010 Year on Biodiversity.
