The Changing Face of the Thur

The unique floodplains of the river Thur are being revived. The river will regain a measure of freedom and people will be better protected from flooding.

For the last five kilometres before it flows into the Rhine, the Thur will be freed from its confines and allowed to periodically flood the alluvial forest. A return to this river dynamic will create unique and diverse habitats for plants and animals: gravel bars, quiet tributaries and a washed away shoreline. More space and new dams will also protect the surrounding farmland against floods.

A nature center will be set up in Flaach by the campsite and swimming pool in order to raise public awareness for this unique area and its revitalisation. In January 2009, the cantonal authorities appointed the PanEco Foundation to manage the center. PanEco was also awarded a contract from the community of Flaach to construct and operate a new onsite restaurant.

The center will become a portal to the Thur floodplain. Interactive exhibits and adventure trails will allow visitors to explore the wetland at their own pace. Guided tours for adults, schools and families will provide unusual natural experiences and firsthand background information. A nature safari also builds up an appetite. The restaurant will allow excursion participants and tour operators, as well as guests of the campsite and swimming pool to enjoy regional specialities and to discuss their experience along the Thur.
