The coastal shelf around southern Sulawesi is unusually shallow. Therefore special care is needed to maintain the livelihood of the local inhabitants, i.e. fishing and the growing of algae. PPLH Puntondo supports the reforestation of mangroves along the coast. Those forests are the nursery for young fish and thus vital to the survival of fish species and fishermen alike. Furthermore, the conservation and restoration of coral reefs is another topic the PPLH is working on. Together with the Indonesian government, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW and local partners a coastal management plan is being developed. All projects of the PPLH are set up and run in collaboration with the local inhabitants. It is the only way to ensure a good result and a further development of the projects. One good example provides the construction of the traditional fishing platforms (Bagang): Around thirty fishermen from the surrounding communities and the PPLH staff built these platforms together from bamboo. Now fish can be caught the traditional way again - not by using dynamite as it happened before.
Environmental education and networking Besides projects in nature conservation, the PPLH Puntondo provides several modules dealing with marine topics for school classes. On site, children and teachers learn about the importance of preserving nature as the source of their livelihood. They pass on the knowledge to their families and thus support the sustainable use of natural resources. Besides environmental education, the PPLH work on the sustainable management of the coast and the development of eco-tourism.
