Giant Trees and Orangutans
Experience a rainforest more beautiful than any other!
Bukit Lawang is a small village in the north of Sumatra. The location makes it somewhat unique. As with many settlements, it lies along a river, the Bohorok. Behind it, however, stretches the Gunung Leuser national park, one of the largest nature reserves in Southeast Asia!
The rainforest in the Gunung Leuser national park is straight out of a picture book: torrential rivers pour through the lush vegetation over which tower majestic giant trees. The park is home to countless endangered animals such as the Sumatran orang-utan, the Sumatran elephant and the Sumatran tiger. Situated on the edge of the Gunung Leuser national park, Bukit Lawang is an ideal starting point for tours to explore the rainforest.
Travel: From Medan there are a range of options depending on time and budget, including taxis, public buses, or tourist buses (the fastest but most expensive). The journey takes approximately 3 hours.
Accommodation: Ecolodge "Bukit Lawang Cottages" or Nora's Homestay.
