Sumatra Orangutan

Save our red relatives

To this day, orangutans are shot, captured, stuffed and mounted as trophies, or abused as pets. All this, in spite of the fact that they have been a protected species for more than 60 years. Their habitat, the tropical rainforest, is also being destroyed on a massive scale by exploitative lumbering, clear cutting for plantations and massive fires. By sponsoring an orangutan you make a significant contribution to the conservation of the rainforest and help each animal to find its way back from cage to freedom.

Elephant

Training instead of killing

The Sumatran elephants are losing their habitat to plantations and settlements. Many are killed in the process by being poisoned or shot. The capture and training of elephants for work provides a better solution than death. In the Bukit Tigapuluh national park of central Sumatra such elephants will help to protect reintroduced orangutans. On their broad backs the park rangers can push through even the most impassable terrain to fight against poaching, timber theft, slashing and burning and illegal settlements. The elephants can also be used on trekking tours for tourists. This enables us to provide a source of income for the local inhabitants.

Long-eared owl

Bird of Prey Sanctuary

For over 50 years, sick, injured or orphaned birds of prey and owls have been cared for and reared at the bird of prey sanctuary in Berg am Irchel. Tours through the station and observations in the field enable visitors to meet the predators and learn about the important role they play in nature. They also learn to treat animals with respect. The sanctuary is actively engaged in national species protection projects. Support our efforts for Swiss birds of prey and provide these fascinating hunters with a way to return to the wild!

Environmental education in the Zurich Weinland

Learn to appreciate the nature at your doorstep, recognise global interconnections and become aware of your own role and impact on the environment. The UBZ NeulandWeinland sensitises children and adults to issues in environmental protection using a fun and hands-on approach. Eventful excursions let visitors appreciate the nature of the Weinland from a completely new perspective. They learn, for example, why beavers choose the forest of the floodplain for their constructions. By making a contribution, you will support our work with school classes and children and help us to awaken in them a fascination for nature and the will to protect it.

Fruit tree

Organic farming on Sumatra and Java

In densely populated Indonesia agriculture is ubiquitous. Particularly on Java, every free piece of land is utilised, while the forests are cleared to obtain ever more. The intensive cultivation quickly drains the thin tropical soil of its nutrients. Organic farming does not use agrochemicals, which benefits both man and the environment. Another important consideration is that the species variety of grains, vegetables and fruit trees is preserved. Fruit trees are also used to reforest cleared land. By sponsoring a fruit tree you help to support sustainable farming on Sumatra and Java and slow the clear cutting of forests.
